Beerline B Background
Beerline B is a former industrial corridor located along the Milwaukee River from Pleasant Street to
Humboldt Avenue.
The Beerline B Plan includes
guidelines for private development and strategies for the improvement of
public infrastructure and recreational space, increasing public access to the
river, and connecting the area to the adjacent Brewer’s Hill neighborhood.
Guided
by the Plan, development in the area has occurred at a rapid pace.
Many housing units have been built or are under construction in
the Beerline B neighborhood.
Recent commercial development includes the
Jewel-Osco retail center at the intersection of Humboldt and North
Avenues and the Lakefront Brewery on Commerce Street. On top of the
bluff, Roots Restaurant is located at the corner of Hubbard Street
and Vine Street.
Kilbourn Park has
been extended down to the Milwaukee River and provides a
visual
connection between the adjacent neighborhoods as well as high
quality usable open space. The Milwaukee Rowing Club facility, a
low slung design with a green roof, provides the transition of greenspace from Kilbourn Park across the river. Two new staircases
were also constructed; the new Vine Street Stair and Booth Street
Stair provide connectivity for the neighborhoods across the bluff.
In 2004, the Beerline B neighborhood won an Excellence on the
Waterfront Project Honor Award in the Historic Preservation and
Adaptive Reuse category from
The Waterfront Center.
