West Area Plan Background
The West Side Area Plan covers a broad and diverse segment of Milwaukee. The
West Side includes:

A variety of housing
options, several neighborhood parks and schools, and a number of
active community organizations |

A wide range of
commercial destinations, such as Midtown Center, The Mosaic on
Burleigh Main Street district, and two Business Improvement
Districts |

Several regional
attractions, including St. Joseph’s Hospital, the VA Medical
Center campus, Miller Park, the Milwaukee County Zoo, Pettit
National Ice Center, and a portion of Wisconsin State Fair Park |
The purpose of the West Side Area
Plan is to evaluate the assets and opportunities of the area in order to guide
new development that builds upon its resources, in a context that responds to
the area’s history, natural areas, and cultural resources.
Plan Goals
The overall goals of the West Side Plan
are to:

strengths of the neighborhoods within the plan area; |

Provide a predictable regulatory process; |

Optimize the long-term value of public and private investments;

Generate consensus among businesses, property owners, residents
and associations. |
The
City of Milwaukee held a kick-off meeting for the West Side Area Plan in May
2009 at Mount Mary College. Community meetings and visioning workshops were held
during 2009 and an open house was held in October 2009.
