Northwest Side Area Plan
Background
Plan
Background
The
previous Northwest Side plan
was over 15 years old and in need of an update to reflect current and future
needs of the Northwest Side. The purpose of the Northwest Side planning
process was to evaluate the assets and opportunities of the area in order to
guide new development that builds upon its resources.
Plan Goals
The overall goals of the Northwest Side Plan were to:
|
»
|
Build
upon the strengths of the neighborhoods within the plan area; |
|
»
|
Provide a predictable regulatory process; |
|
»
|
Optimize the long-term value of public and private investments;
and |
|
»
|
Generate consensus among businesses, property owners, residents
and associations. |
Plan
Advisory Group
The Plan Advisory Group (PAG), a group
of key stakeholders who represent community organizations
or have an interest in the community’s future, was responsible for making recommendations for public participation, plan
development, and plan implementation and for helping to announce public meetings, workshops, and open houses to the
general public.
The kick-off PAG meeting was in March 2006.
Consultant Team: Planning & Design Institute, Inc.
Planning & Design Institute, Inc
(PDI), a Milwaukee based firm, was selected by the
Contract Management Team to be the consultant
for the Northwest Side Area Plan.
Open Houses
Open houses were
held in October 2007 to discuss the draft plan.
Public Workshops
|
In January 2007, we held three
interactive workshops to review information gathered through research, community surveys, stakeholder
interviews, and focus groups and to begin to develop
recommendations and identify catalytic projects. View the
presentation from the workshops
and read the
draft
market analysis. |

Focus
Groups: Residential, Industrial, and Commercial
In November 2006, Planning and Design
Institute, Inc (PDI) facilitated three
focus group meetings. The focus groups
discussed residential, commercial and industrial issues. The meetings were very
successful with nearly 50 participants, including residents, brokers, developers
and non-profit organizations. DCD
thanks the John C. Cudahy YMCA, Christian
Faith Fellowship, and Goodwill Industries for hosting the meetings and
Roundy’s Supermarkets for donating refreshments.

Community and Image Preference Survey Results
For several months, DCD staff collected opinions through the Community Survey and
Image Preference Survey. Surveys are one way
the City can learn what is happening in a neighborhood and what changes would
make the neighborhood a better place.
