Northeast Side Area Plan
Background
The Northeast
Side Area Plan covers a broad and diverse segment of Milwaukee from Riverworks and UWM on the north to Brewers Hill and Brady Street on the south,
Bronzeville and King Drive on the west to the lakefront (Bradford Beach to Pier
Wisconsin) on the east—and everything in between!
The plan will provide a blueprint for future development of the area and will
identify specific projects that will be undertaken to support that development.
The plan will provide policies based on shared values that will shape the
character of development for years to come. The plan will also outline an
implementation strategy and a framework for community partnership.
Two major public surveys for the plan were completed. Results from the
Community Survey
were presented to the Plan Advisory Group in May 2007. Results from the
Image Preference Survey
were presented to the Plan Advisory Group in August 2007.

and |
|
» |
Generate consensus among businesses, property owners, residents
and associations. |
Plan Advisory Group
Planning
staff and the Northeast Side Area Plan consultants met with the
Plan Advisory Group in 2007 for brainstorming, visioning, and
feedback sessions.
These meetings provided an initial opportunity
for the Plan Advisory Group to envision projects and strategies
for districts and corridors at a detailed level.
Project Management Team
The Project Management Team (PMT)
met for the first time on
December 14,
2006. The PMT joined the Plan Advisory Group at
the visioning session and feedback
sessions.
Contract Management Team

 |
The
Contract
management Team (CMT) met on October 16,
2007 with Northeast Side Area Plan consultants for a plan
update on districts, corridors
and catalytic projects.
|
 |
Over the course of 2007, project planners accompanied CMT members and other community
representatives on sub-area tours to discuss issues pertaining to
specific characteristics of districts and corridors.

Plan Advisory Group and
Public Participation
The
Plan Advisory Group (PAG) consists of approximately 50-100 key community
stakeholders with first-hand knowledge of the area. The PAG reviews
the work of the consultants at all major milestones of the
planning process. Members are responsible for making
recommendations for public participation, plan development, and
plan implementation. Most importantly, members help get out
the word to the general public when surveys, meetings, workshops
and open houses provide opportunities for public input.
Fundraising
Area Plans generally cost $150,000
to complete. The City of Milwaukee contributes $75,000 toward each plan and the
remaining $75,000 is contributed by community organizations and stakeholders.
Historically, this process has been very successful; community funding partners
take greater ownership of the plan and move it forward through implementation
once the plan is adopted by the City of Milwaukee’s Common Council.
We are grateful for the financial participation of
our
community funding partners.
Existing Plans
We looked at past and current planning
efforts so that we can summarize and, where appropriate,
incorporate major issues and opportunities into the Northeast Side
Area Plan.
