Avenues West
Redevelopment Plan
Avenues West Redevelopment Plan website
DCD is preparing a
redevelopment plan for the Avenues West area, including
the SoHi Main Street district. The
boundaries of the redevelopment project area are approximately 23rd St to
29th St, Clybourn to Highland.
The plan focuses on mixed use and commercial
redevelopment, housing rehabilitation and investment, and includes a
multi-family housing strategy.

Cherry
Court
Status: Complete
This Hope VI
120-unit apartment complex for the elderly and people with disabilities at
1524 N. 24th St. is a state-of-the-art, five-story, green building. HACM
also constructed 75 single-family homes and 1 duplex in the Cherry Court
neighborhood under a separate HOPE VI grant from HUD and WHEDA Tax Credits. |

City on a Hill
The City, community partners, and property owners are working together on
redevelopment of the area between State, 20th,
Kilbourn, and 21st (formerly
Good Samaritan Hospital). City on a Hill
is developing the 52-unit
William A. Passavant residential care complex for the elderly. The project
includes
renovating the building at 2195 W. State St. into
28 apartments and constructing an addition with 24 units.

The Milwaukee Science Education Consortium
operates a a K-12 charter school on the eastern campus. The Gorman Company
constructed Historic Kilbourn Lofts, with 99 garden units.

Harley-Davidson Neighborhood
Status: Complete
Harley-Davidson awarded NIDC a grant to support forgivable home rehabilitation
loans to owner-occupants for exterior improvements in the area bounded by Vliet,
McKinley, 36th, and 40th. Loans were awarded to 16 households for up to $10,000
and forgivable after five years, as long as the owner continues to occupy the
home. |

Highland
Gardens and Highland Homes
Highland Gardens, a mid-rise at 1818
W. Juneau Ave, is the City’s first green facility. Sustainability efforts included daylighting, green roof, rain garden, salvaged material used in construction,
and specialty interior finishes such as cork floors. Highland Homes, Milwaukee’s
newest urban sub-division, incorporates energy efficiency, universal design
features, and controlled construction to create high quality single family homes
that are beautiful and affordable. For more information, visit the

Norris
Playground
Norris Playground occupies almost an entire city block bound by W.
State St., W. Kilbourn Ave., N. 19th St. and N. 18th St. The City Department of
Public Works and Department of City Development, Milwaukee Public Schools,
Marquette University and Avenues West Association worked together on a master
plan for the site. DCD and Marquette are negotiating a long-term lease for the
property that may include making additional improvements to the property.

Prairie Apartments
Status: Complete
Prairie Apartments,
1218 W. Highland Blvd., opened in 2009. The
project provides 24 one-bedroom and studio apartments, a fitness center, technology center
and
laundry facilities. Rent subsidies are available for
two-thirds of the units. Prairie Apartments serves individuals at risk of
homelessness because of mental health or other conditions. Supportive services
are provided to tenants by Guest House of Milwaukee.

SOHI Main Street
Status: Ongoing
SOHI is one of Milwaukee's six Main
Street Districts and includes N. 27th Street from W. Highland to St. Paul. SOHI completed a
market study to guide development, worked closely with Milwaukee Police on a
security camera initiative to heighten neighborhood safety, and designated Gateway
Markers to
create a sense of identity for the district.
