Redevelopment Plan

DCD is preparing a
redevelopment plan for the area around
the SoHi Main Street, Wisconsin Ave. and State St. The boundaries
of the area were approved by the Council in Feb. 2006.
The plan will focus on commercial redevelopment,
rehabilitation and investment, and a multi-family housing strategy. |

Cherry
Court
Status

Complete
This new Hope VI family-friendly development at 1524 N. 24th St.
re-integrates residents into the surrounding neighborhoods.
HACM plans
construction of 77 single-family houses
within a two-mile radius of Cherry Court. The new houses will be a mix of rental
and owner-occupied market-rate.

Catalytic Project

The City, community partners, and
property owners are working together on redevelopment of the former Good
Samaritan Hospital located between State, 20th, Kilbourn, and 21st.
The Milwaukee Science
Education Consortium (the Medical College, Marquette University, and
Cardinal Stritch University) operates a a K-8 charter school on the eastern campus
and hopes to add a high school within the next few years.
The
Gorman
Company constructed Historic Kilbourn Lofts, with 99 garden units. There is
continuing interest in building market-rate townhomes on the parking lot. West
End Dev. Corp. relocated into the City on a Hill complex.

Harley-Davidson Headquarters Neighborhood

Harley-Davidson is offering forgivable home rehabilitation
loans to owner-occupants for exterior improvements in the area bounded by Vliet,
McKinley, 36th, and 40th.
NIDC will administer the program. Loans are for up to
$10,000 and forgivable after five years, as long as the owner continues to
occupy the home. The Target Investment Neighborhood (TIN) which was
established for the area bounded by Cherry, McKinley, 35th, and 40th resulted in
over $1 million dollars in investment, with 12 new and rehabilitated housing
units, improved landscaping and a new tot lot for neighborhood residents to
enjoy.

Highland
Gardens and Highland Homes
Status

Milwaukee's first “green” public housing project, Highland Gardens is located
at 1818 W. Juneau Ave. The sustainability efforts include
daylighting, a green roof, rain garden, salvaged material used in construction,
and specialty interior finishes such as cork floors.
HACM is building
Highland Homes, 46
single-family, ADA-compliant homes in the same neighborhood.

Norris
Playground
Catalytic Project
Status

Design
complete, fundraising in progress
MPS, DPW, DCD, Avenues West Association, Marquette University, and various
property owners worked together on a master plan for the site, located between
18th and 19th north of Kilbourn. Planned amenities include a playing field, tree
border, decorative fencing, a bandstand, a half basketball court, and benches
and lights along a pedestrian path. |

SoHi Main Street

SOHI is one of Milwaukee's four Main
Street Districts.
Located on North 27th between Highland and St. Paul, SoHi was
“adopted” by
HGA Architects and Engineers, who will provide $20,000
worth of pro bono architectural services each year for a period of three years.
