Park East Corridor |
 |
|
Message from Mayor Tom Barrett:
I invite you to learn more about the Park East
Corridor, a stretch of development opportunity made possible through the removal
of a freeway spur and significant public investment to prepare the area for
redevelopment. The Park East plan outlines plenty of room for residential,
office, retail and entertainment uses within this extension of our downtown.
Each new development will enhance Milwaukee’s ongoing renaissance as well as
contribute towards our local economy. Check our website often for the latest
‘buzz’ on this corridor of opportunity.

|
The
Park East Corridor consists of over 60 acres, 24 of which
are prime sites for redevelopment. The properties are
located within the Milwaukee Downtown, in close proximity
to the Milwaukee River. Milwaukee County owns 16 acres and
is currently selling their properties through a Request
for Proposal (RFP) process.
For more information on available land, please

Craig Dillman,
Milwaukee County Economic Development.

The
temporary art project will culminate in 11 installations
on sixteen blocks of the corridor.
View a printable map of the
installations. The City of Milwaukee
Arts Board initiated this project by voting unanimously to
provide over $11,000 for artist stipends. The project
invites pedestrians, bikers, people who ride the bus, and
drivers to explore the Park East Corridor. Thirteen local
artists have come forward with bold, diverse projects. All
the art will be in place by August 23, when there will be
a week of activities August 23-30. Some projects will be
up by July 24 for Summer Gallery Night.
Sponsors and hosts for the art include, but are not
limited to, the following: the City of Milwaukee,
Milwaukee, Ruvin Development Inc., Mandel Group, Laacke &
Joys, Big Bend Development, The Flatiron, M&I Bank, Time
Warner Cable, The Moderne LLC, RSC Developers, Grace
Lutheran Church, Riverfront Plaza and Village Church.

Riverfront hotel under construction
A
"topping off" ceremony was held on July 17, 2009 to
celebrate the 60% completion of the new 5-story Aloft
Hotel in the Park East Corridor.
The $27 million Aloft Hotel project in the Park East
Corridor is being developed by partnership between
Waveland Development and Horizon Construction and is
expected to create 75 permanent jobs. The hotel is
scheduled to open in Winter 2009.
The City of Milwaukee is working with the development team
to add a river walk segment, dock wall, public plaza and
street improvements as part of the project, using
approximately $1 million in tax incremental financing. The
Aloft Hotel, a Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc.
brand, has also been assisted by US Bank, the Wisconsin
Department of Commerce, and the Wisconsin Housing and
Economic Development Authority.

Park
East’s northern gateway taking shape
The Park East’s gateway to the north is visibly
transformed with the completion of the Flatiron, the
ongoing construction of The North End development, the
placement of the North End Water Tower and a new public
plaza currently under construction at the intersection of
Water and Pleasant Streets. The historic water tower
structure once served the former Pfister & Vogel tannery,
which stood on a 7-acre site along N. Water Street. The
44,000 pound structure was preserved and painted to mark
the new development rising from the tannery site.
The North End,
a $175 million project, will develop in phases over the
next 5-7 years and is expected to become a neighborhood
within itself with a variety of housing options and
supportive retail services. Construction began in 2008 on
phase one: a 5-story apartment building featuring 83
apartments and 12,000 square feet of first floor
neighborhood retail (Block 24 on the Park East map). Grand
opening for the new apartment building, the One, was held
in June 2009. Construction of phase two is planned to
begin later this year (Block 23) and will consist of two
5-story apartment buildings that offer 130-160 apartments,
a new RiverWalk segment, public plaza, and new road.
