City to invest in ‘Stronger Milwaukee’ projects; Mayor signs legislation to fund five ‘large impact’ projects 
Mayor Barrett authorized nearly $1 million in grants to fund five ‘Stronger Milwaukee’ projects, using Large Impact Development grants provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Mayor Barrett signed the legislation at Capitol Stampings, 2700 W. North Avenue, a partner in a project to provide specialized job training to replace retiring workers and fill the needs for local employers. Joint venture plans Bronzeville project; proposal seeks new apartment complex, Northtown expansion 
Northtown Mall was one of the first new developments on Milwaukee's North Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in the 1980s. Now a proposed apartment complex next door and a possible expansion of the mall could be pioneers in the budding Bronzeville area. The project at the northwest corner of King Drive and North Avenue would total about $12.5 million for rehabilitating the existing mall and constructing a 50-unit apartment building. A second phase could include doubling the size of the 30,000-square-foot shopping center that's anchored by a Walgreens.    Oct 5, The Business Journal

Mitchell Street ‘Stronger Neighborhoods’ plan moving forward; Mayor’s initiative marks 24th neighborhood-focused TIF investment 
A Barrett Administration proposal to boost revitalization along W. Mitchell Street on Milwaukee’s south side was approved today by the Common Council’s Zoning, Neighborhood and Development Committee. The measure will be considered by the full Common Council at its meeting September 25. The proposed creation of a $3.1 million Tax Incremental Financing District in the Historic Mitchell Street neighborhood would assist in attracting and retaining retail, office and service businesses in one of the city’s oldest commercial corridors.     Sep 18

There will be a ribbon cutting in Milwaukee today, for an Italian company that's locating its North American headquarters in the city. The building is one of many going up in the Menomonee Valley, as the former industrial hub undergoes a renaissance. Building boom:  office, condo construction mark Third Ward, Walker's Point resurgence

Lately, the booming neighborhood on downtown's southern edge has seen another set of guideposts: construction cranes. One more hotel is proposed; Park East plan calls for long-term lodging, condos
Another upscale hotel project has surfaced in downtown Milwaukee, but this one is close to securing financing and is not seeking cash from City Hall, the developer said Monday. The $73 million, 30-story development - dubbed The Moderne - is planned for the southwest corner of W. Juneau Ave. and N. Readying Bronzeville renaissance
Calvin Greer wants the new Bronzeville to have a cultural aura as distinctive as New York's SoHo, San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury or New Orleans' French Quarter. Momentum suddenly builds in the Park East

Mayor declares 30th St. Industrial Corridor Milwaukee’s Greenlight District for jobs
Mayor Barrett announced the City of Milwaukee will commit significant resources and work with local, state and federal partners on a plan to redevelop the 30th Street Industrial Corridor, similar to the long-range efforts that went into the revitalization of the Menomonee Valley. Milwaukee saw slight dip in home building in 2006, but boom in downtown construction should help job growth
The city of Milwaukee's torrid home-building pace slackened in 2006 but not as dramatically as that of its outstate neighbors, city construction figures show. Milwaukee added 540 homes to its housing stock last year - 184 single-family and 356 multifamily units, the Milwaukee Department of City Development reported Friday. That volume is 22% below that of 2005, but it beats the 36% plunge in statewide home building reported through September by the Wisconsin Builders Association.  More importantly, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said, 2006 culminated a seven-year, $830.9 million downtown residential construction boom that sets the stage for job growth.      Jan 5, JSOnline

New homes initiative backed; Bronzeville to include affordable housing
Milwaukee city officials cleared the last hurdle Tuesday toward creating a new housing development near the proposed African-American cultural and entertainment district, with many of the homes designated as affordable housing. The Bronzeville New Homes initiative will include 23 owner-occupied, single-family homes that will be built on scattered vacant lots along N. 4th, N. 5th and N. 6th streets, between W. TIN as precious as silver; grants help area regain its luster
In the early 1900s, workers who toiled in the Menomonee Valley carried their wages in the form of silver dollars through a tunnel that led north to W. National Ave. and its adjacent neighborhood. Several thousand strong, they spent those wages in the shops and saloons on the avenue, and built solid homes for their families. ‘The king’ of groundbreakings kicks-off El Rey’s $5.5 million expansion
Mayor Barrett and El Rey Mexican Food Products owners Olivia and Ernesto Villarreal led a groundbreaking ceremony to kick-off construction of a new $5.5 million supermarket at 916 S. Four Main Street districts attracting businesses, creating jobs
Since starting in spring 2005, the Main Street Milwaukee program has helped open 28 new businesses and create 62 full- and part-time jobs. Madison-based company may expand in Milwaukee
A Madison company providing telecommunications services for people with hearing loss plans to open a second operation that could eventually create up to 800 call-center jobs in downtown Milwaukee. CapTel Inc. would expand its operations to Reuss Federal Plaza, 310 W. Margarett Sinclair's two-story house has spacious rooms, a large eat-in kitchen and a feature found in the homes of many well-to-do families: an elevator. Barrett, Chinese official finalize economic ties
The booming Chinese port city of Ningbo, which soon will anchor one end of the longest ocean-spanning bridge in the world, laid down a pylon Thursday to build a bridge of a different sort. Approval roars for Harley-Davidson museum plan
The Milwaukee’s Common Council approved the redevelopment plan for the future site of a Harley-Davidson Inc. museum and office complex in the Menomonee Valley. The site will feature a $95 million museum, restaurant and office complex. The development is expected to create 420 to 570 jobs and attract more than 350,000 visitors a year to Milwaukee.
