Milwaukee saw slight dip in home building in 2006, but boom in downtown
construction should help job growth
The city of Milwaukee's torrid home-building pace slackened in 2006 but not as
dramatically as that of its outstate neighbors, city construction figures show.
Milwaukee added 540 homes to its housing stock last year - 184 single-family and
356 multifamily units, the Milwaukee Department of City Development reported
Friday. That volume is 22% below that of 2005, but it beats the 36% plunge in
statewide home building reported through September by the Wisconsin Builders
Association. More importantly, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said, 2006
culminated a seven-year, $830.9 million downtown residential construction boom
that sets the stage for job growth.
