Milwaukee celebrates Independence Day on July FIFTH

Long tradition of City celebrations continues – this year on the day after the Fourth

Since 1911, the City of Milwaukee has provided a safe and friendly celebration of America’s independence. It’s a uniquely Milwaukee approach to this great American holiday.

In 2010, however, Milwaukee marks the Fourth of July on July Fifth. That’s because the holiday falls on a Sunday this year. Notwithstanding the switch in dates, Monday’s events will follow the city’s longstanding tradition of focusing on families and neighborhoods.

The last time the city celebrated on July Fifth was in 2004, and, it will not happen again until 2021, 2027, and 2032.

For those who think celebrating on July Fifth is inappropriate, look back at how our nation’s founders handled the holiday when in first fell on a Sunday in 1779. That year they moved their celebrations to Monday.

Independence Day is special in Milwaukee. In parks throughout the city, families and friends gather for picnics, games, doll buggy parades and talent contests. At night the sky is filled with fireworks bursting all over town.

Milwaukee celebrations will be held at:

Alcott Park , Enderis Playfield, Gordon Park, Humboldt Park, Jackson Park, Dr. M L King, Jr. Park, Lake Park, Lincoln Park, McGovern Park, Mitchell Park, Noyes Park, Sherman Park, Washington Park, and Wilson Park.
