City succeeding in
recycling buildings
The City of Milwaukee has been working with
WasteCap Wisconsin and local contractors to recycle more building materials
from construction and demolition projects.
A blighted industrial building at 3048 W. Galena Avenue, in the
30th Street Industrial Corridor,
was beyond repair and scheduled for demolition.
The City of Milwaukee was successful in
recycling an estimated 95% of the waste, thereby keeping it out of the
landfill, and preserving natural resources.
Of the approximately 1.5 million pounds of waste, the following was
recycled:
|
|
» |
1.3 million pounds of concrete and clean brick |
|
» |
115,400 pounds of steel and metals |
|
» |
682 pounds of copper |

The City of Milwaukee and Wastecap have been
encouraging contractors to learn to reduce, reuse and recycle building
materials. Last year, the Department of City Development and WasteCap Wisconsin
hosted a training session that offered step-by-step guidelines on establishing a
recycling program, calculating building material quantities, finding recycling
markets for waste materials, and more. For more information on construction and
demolition waste management, visit:

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and
the US Environmental Protection Agency are partners in this City of Milwaukee
project.
