City celebrates Stadium Business Park grand opening
Former
brownfield now home to 450 jobs
|
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett led a ceremony today to mark the transformation of a
challenging 17-acre former metal foundry on 38th & Mitchell into the thriving
Stadium Business Park.
The City of Milwaukee assisted developer Real Estate Recycling with a $2.4
million tax incremental financing district (TIF) to demolish and clean up the
site of former Ampco Metal Inc. and build four efficient green buildings for
light industrial use.
The Wisconsin Department of Commerce and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency also assisted with $600,000 in brownfields
grants. |

Mayor Barrett said there are more people working in
the Stadium Business Park today then when Ampco Metal Foundry was last operating
in 2002, with 125 employees. Today the Stadium Business Park is home to ten
companies and 450 employees.
“This is a great example of the city’s use of its economic development toolbox
to put underused land back into business to attract companies and jobs to
Milwaukee,” said Mayor Barrett. “With partners like Real Estate Recycling, we’re
creating modern business parks that offer companies efficiencies and advantages
to remain competitive.”
According to the Department of City Development, the Stadium Business Park TIF
has generated $13 million in tax base, which is more than originally estimated.
|
“This project is what Mayor Barrett means when he
says ‘Milwaukee is open for business,’ said Real Estate Recycling President
Jeff Hall. “The city and state were strong partners in taking this obsolete,
contaminated property and turning it into a state-of-the art business park,
which attracts new, growing companies into the City of Milwaukee.” |
