Grand opening highlights successful RACM/DPW cooperation

The recent grand opening of the Department of Public Works' new field operations
facility in the 3800 block of N. 35th Street marked the successful conclusion of
a creative partnership between the Redevelopment Authority and DPW. The
facility, constructed on 25 acres of the former Tower Automotive plant property,
unites DPW and Waterworks activities that formerly were scattered among six
locations. One of those locations, the Traser Yards at 6th and Canal, was part
of the property purchased by Harley-Davidson for its new museum.
In order to meet Harley's deadlines, RACM entered into a development agreement
with a private developer to construct the building according to DPW's
specifications. The building was turned over to DPW upon completion. DPW and
Waterworks staff have occupied the new facility since February. At the formal
grand opening May 25, both Mayor Tom Barrett and DPW Commissioner Jeff Mantes
noted enthusiastically that the RACM/DPW partnership produced a building "on
time and under budget."
