Mayor's Design Awards

These Awards recognize exceptional places in the city of Milwaukee and outstanding contributions to these places by individuals or organizations.

If you would like to nominate a building, place, person, or organization, please fill out the form below. Questions? Email mayorsdesignawards@milwaukee.gov or call 414.286.5794. Caveat: The project must be in the City of Milwaukee.

Submit a nomination: Nominations must be submitted by February 19, 2010.

What?   Check the category or categories that apply. Please submit a separate application for each project you submit.
Design that grabs you.
    Great curb appeal; engages the street in a distinct manner; inviting windows, welcoming entries, distinct signage; incorporates active public space, encourages informal public gathering.
Go green.
    Incorporates environmentally sustainable elements such as passive solar design, convective cooling techniques, green roof and/or low impact design for water quality; new or retrofitted environmentally friendly construction or design. Note: if the building is LEED certified, please indicate in the Why section below.
Historic splendor. Cream of the Cream Historic Preservation
    Historically appropriate restoration or adaptive reuse of residential, commercial, religious or public property; sensitive addition to a historic property; new construction sensitive to a designated historic district; heroic effort to bring a structure back from the brink; ingenious reuse of materials; innovative reuse of a building or space; adaptive reuse and restoration of an original structure; rehabilitation of an original building façade.
It’s all in the details.
    Creative use of common building materials and paint; imaginative design and use of lighting, signs and other exterior fixtures; design and details evoke brand and celebrate a certain ethnicity, culture or heritage; unique or unusual reuse; incorporates new and old design elements; includes art or public amenities.
Live. Work. Play. Any or all.
    Extraordinary contribution to the live/work environment; reflects the style and personality of the owner, while making a positive and sensitive contribution to the neighborhood fabric; expansion or renovation that’s harmonious with the original structure.
Spaces and places.
    Notable bridges, walkways, alleyways, pedestrian amenities, streetscaping, parks and gathering spots.
Urban oddities and amenities.
    Any gesture that makes the city interesting, provocative and memorable; willing to take a risk on a forgotten place; plants the seed for good design within the community; gritty, eclectic, funky, cool; a project that goes before, preparing the way for others.
Urbanism redefined.
    Context sensitive infill that promotes housing and/or employment density; new construction that complements its surroundings; design elements relate to adjacent structures or landscape; contemporary design that’s contextually sound.
Urban heroes.
    A periodic award presented by the Mayor that recognizes outstanding efforts by individuals or organizations that contribute to the preservation, enhancement, education or appreciation of Milwaukee’s urban fabric.

Where? If nominating a building or place Address (street and number) and name of building or business. If the project you are nominating covers multiple structures, or a larger area such as open space or streetscaping, please indicate the area by providing street boundaries.

Who? If nominating a person or organization Name and contact information for the nominee.

Why and How?  Why is the nominee outstanding and unique? How has the nominee had an  impact on the city? (for example:  jobs created, housing, commercial / industrial space added or renovated, neighborhood livability improved) Please be brief!

You?  Your name and contact information (including your email) so we can invite you to the Award presentation if your nominee becomes an honoree. The Award goes to the project, but we want to recognize all those involved. If you know them, please provide the names of the business/building owner, architect/designer, and others involved.
