2007 Main Street Milwaukee Volunteer Awards
 

Each year Main Street Milwaukee volunteers are invited to the annual Volunteer Appreciation Party with Mayor Tom Barrett. The evening features food from local vendors, music and an awards program. This year the Volunteer Award winners received special prize packages offered by the following sponsors:  Hotel Metro, The Ambassador Hotel, Lakeside School of Massage Therapy, Northside YMCA, Marquette University, and Discovery World.


Main Streeter Award
The Main Streeter Award recognizes exemplary leadership in neighborhood development by an individual. The navigator is a dedicated individual who initiates changes, has overcome obstacles, has attained accomplishments in the field, and truly demonstrates visionary leadership.
 

Winner: Gordy Anderson, Silver City

  An MVP among volunteers, Gordy Anderson, goes above and beyond in fueling the progress of Main Street Milwaukee.
 
He taps into resources to assist the program, dedicates his free time to staff all special events and is an overall cheerleader for the power of the Main Street program.
 
This P&H Mining employee has taken the lead in expanding the boundaries of the Silver City Main Street District to include his employer as well as neighboring municipalities. Through Mr. Anderson’s work, P&H Mining is not only a major sponsor of Silver City activities but the company offers people power by recruiting employee volunteers.
 
Mr. Anderson connected local businesses with links to trusted suppliers and other resources. He developed a partnership between Silver City and the West Allis/West Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce.

Red Eye Award
The Red Eye Award recognizes a volunteer committee member that clearly burns the candle at both ends with a record number of hours spent on Main Street Milwaukee works.
 

Winner: Brien Allen, Mosaic On Burleigh District

  Logged more than 485 hours, volunteering to help create ‘the Mosaic on Burleigh’ district identity, including the concept of creating street amenities that feature obelisks, benches and trash bins all featuring mosaics made from ceramic, glass and plastic pieces of residents’ dishes, heirlooms etc. St. Joe’s Hospital has an obelisk that highlights all of the neighborhood babies delivered by the hospital.
 
Planned and coordinated a special fundraising art auction to raise money for Mosaic District activities. Spent many hours gathering items for the auction and promoting the event to increase attendance.

Silver City Main Street Volunteer of the Year
 

Winner: Mel Miskimen


Mel Miskimen
  Spearheaded Shea Park, a visible gateway along National Avenue, and spent countless hours on the project. .
 
Takes care of planting 4 planters along National Avenue, adding flair to the street.
 
Offers her services as a graphic designer for free. Designed the Silver City billboard on 35th and National Avenue.
 
Attends public hearings to speak up on behalf of the Main Street Milwaukee program.

Mosaic On Burleigh Main Street Volunteer of the Year
 

Winner: Oretha Renee Harris


Oretha Renee Harris
  Spent more than 448 hours in 2007 volunteering on projects in the district.
 
Chairs the Crime & Grime Committee, as a Sherman Park neighbor and Block Club Captain,  to involve residents and businesses in keeping an eye on the street to improve public safety and maintain cleanliness of the district.
 
Spearheaded the ‘Adopt-A-block’ program in Mosaic, a program in which residents and businesses adopt just one block to keep clean, resulting in a dramatic decrease in litter.
 
Is one of 25 volunteers that worked on creating an ‘identity’ for Burleigh Street, the Mosaic on Burleigh


Lincoln Village Main Street Volunteer of the Year
 

Winner: Judy Ramazzini


Judy Ramazzini
  Spearheaded the effort to restore the General Kosciuszko statue in the Milwaukee County park named after him. Shot photos, gathered cost estimates from sculpture restoration firms around the country, set up an awareness booth at Polish Fest, engaged Milwaukee County Parks system and Polish communities.
 
Chairs the Design Committee, one of four standing committees that Main Street Districts establish under the 4-point development plan. She worked on a façade & signage design plan for Lincoln Village.
 
Sought and found a local artist to design and construct a public art piece for the upcoming Tres Hermanos plaza project in 2008.
 
 
SOHI Main Street Volunteer of the Year
 

Winner: Eileen Hanley


Eileen Hanley
Spent many hours organizing the Taste of SOHI and SOHI Saturdae events that drew thousands to the district.
  Devoted time and energy to the SOHI Retail and Real Estate Development marketing brochure.

 
Urban Pioneer Award
The Urban Pioneer Award recognizes real estate developments or district projects that promote the character of a Main Street district, offer unique appeal and can be considered a model project for other neighborhoods.  
 

Winner: Redevelopment of 958 N. 27th St.

958 N. 27th St.

The complete renovation and restoration of a 9-unit apartment building on a prominent corner of N. 27th Street took countless hours but is now a gem.

  Victoria and Urie Kapustin live in one of the units with their son and actively volunteer for the SOHI District projects.

Helping Hand Award
The Helping Hand Award recognizes an organization or company that has shown outstanding commitment and support in transforming a Main Street district.
 

Winner: Burleigh Street BID #27

  A full partner and financial investor in every success of the Mosaic on Burleigh Main Street District.

For the past three years, the businesses of this district assessed themselves to fund new street amenities and street cleaning, and assisted with grants for signs and advertising.
 
Sponsors the award-winning Business Seminar series, offering individual technical assistance to the businesses along Burleigh Street.
