Bronzeville:
Neighborhood Development
The Bronzeville
neighborhood is an historic African American community. Many of the
homes in the Bronzeville neighborhood were built prior to the turn of
the century, similar to nearby Halyard Park and Brewer’s Hill.
The residential
component of the Bronzeville project will provide funds to
help existing homeowners update their properties as well as
offer opportunities to build affordable new homes in the
neighborhood.
Beechie
Brooks Targeted Investment Neighborhood
The City of Milwaukee’s Targeted Investment Neighborhood (TIN) program
is a revitalization strategy in which resources are focused in a
designated area. The TIN approach concentrates investment as well as City services to reduce crime, clean up litter and compel
landlords to fix up their properties. The program works in
partnership with a neighborhood community organization to stabilize
and increase owner-occupancy, strengthen property values and improve
the physical appearance of a neighborhood. The goal of the TIN program
is to reverse trends of disinvestment by improving the physical and
social infrastructure of a neighborhood and improving its desirability as
a place to live and do business.
The neighborhood surrounding Bronzeville is designated as a TIN
district and is named after Beechie Brooks, an urban pioneer and
advocate for central city development. The boundaries are I-43 to the
west, North King Drive to the east, West Center Street to the north
and West Garfield Avenue to the south.
