The Bronzeville
Cultural and
Entertainment District is a redevelopment project that will
revitalize an older commercial district and surrounding
neighborhood in the historical heart of Milwaukee’s
African-American community. The commercial district runs along
East North Avenue between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and
North 7th Street.
Bronzeville will create a strong cultural
identity for this traditional main street to attract
additional investment and employment opportunities. At the
same time, Bronzeville will empower entrepreneurs, raise
community spirit and help promote the City of Milwaukee as a
year-round tourist destination.
History of the
neighborhood
The project is located in what was Milwaukee’s first Bronzeville neighborhood, a business, economic and cultural
center to many of Milwaukee’s African-American residents
between the early 1900s and the 1960s.

Project overview
There are two components to the Bronzeville redevelopment
project:
Public
Investment
To-date, the City of Milwaukee has budgeted $4.6 million
dollars for the planning and development of the project area.
Under Mayor Barrett’s leadership, the City of Milwaukee
created a $3.6 million financing district around Bronzeville
that is expected to leverage an additional $10 million in
private investment in the area. A federal grant of $200,000 is
earmarked for the project and the State Department of
Transportation awarded a $450,000 Congestion and Mitigation
Air Quality Grant (CMAQ) towards the street improvements along
E. North Avenue.
